Fourteen people, including an Irish citizen, have been sentenced to 10 years in prison in Togo for participating in a banned protest against the ruling dynasty. The protest occurred in December 2018. The court in Lomé convicted the defendants of plotting against state security and criminal conspiracy. Abdoul Aziz Goma, an Irish-Togolese national, was not present at the protest but provided lodging for demonstrators. Four others, who fled Togo, received 20-year sentences in absentia. Since the protests in 2017 and 2018, authorities have arrested many, with 92 individuals still imprisoned.
