Investigation launched after Oswego County deputy's fatal shooting
An investigation is underway regarding the fatal shooting of a New York man by sheriff's deputies. The incident happened last week in Constantia, around 36 miles from Syracuse. Oswego County deputies were called to a home after reports of a man having a "psychotic episode." They were also there to serve an order of protection to Miles Dignean. When deputies informed Dignean that his 3-year-old child was being taken and that a family member was en route to pick up the child, tensions rose. Reports indicate that Dignean became uncooperative and attempted to stop deputies from taking his child. A struggle broke out. During this altercation, Dignean allegedly swung a metal object at officers, hitting a state police trooper in the head. In response, a sheriff’s deputy fired his weapon, striking Dignean. Dignean was taken to a local hospital but was later pronounced dead. Two deputies involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave as the investigation continues. Dignean's parents have not yet commented on the situation.
