Indore faces backlash over wedding waste collection methods
Indore, known as India's Cleanest City for seven years, is facing criticism over its recent efforts to maintain cleanliness. Concerns grew after pictures emerged of sanitation workers collecting litter from a wedding procession, known as a Baraat. The photos showed two workers in protective clothing, each holding a bucket to gather garbage. Users on social media reacted strongly, calling it a "sickening misuse of labour." Some criticized the situation, stating that kindness has been replaced by cheap labour. Arjit Soni, who posted the photos, defended the practice. He argued that while people should not litter, changing behavior takes time. He suggested that Indore’s proactive approach helps achieve cleanliness now instead of waiting for everyone to change. Despite these efforts, observers noted that some litter remained, questioning Indore's civic responsibility. The city, which was not in the top 10 in earlier cleanliness rankings, has made significant changes in waste management to reclaim its top position.
