Indian government investigates celebrity-endorsed gaming sites
The Indian government is closely examining offshore online money gaming platforms that are publicly endorsed by celebrities. This comes as concerns grow over financial security and the integrity of the nation's economy. The finance ministry has already taken action by blocking 357 illegal gaming sites and freezing ₹126 crore in funds. In a statement, the finance ministry warned that many Bollywood actors, cricketers, and social media influencers are promoting these platforms. They advise people to be cautious as using these sites could risk their personal finances and support illegal activities that could harm national security. With the Indian Premier League (IPL) season approaching, the government plans to enforce stricter regulations against illegal gaming. The Directorate General of Goods and Services Tax Intelligence (DGGI) has intensified actions against certain Indian nationals running these gaming sites from abroad. So far, 166 bank accounts linked to these operations have been blocked, and three arrests have been made. The DGGI's investigations reveal that the online money gaming industry includes both domestic and foreign operators. Under GST laws, this type of gaming is considered a supply of goods and is taxed at 28%. There are approximately 700 offshore entities under investigation for avoiding tax regulations. In recent enforcement efforts, the DGGI has blocked nearly 2,000 bank accounts used for collecting money related to these illegal platforms. Around ₹4 crore has also been provisionally attached. The DGGI emphasizes that these illegal activities distort fair competition and can pose risks to national security. The finance ministry has reiterated its concerns about celebrity endorsements, urging the public to remain vigilant. Engaging with these offshore platforms could jeopardize personal finances and indirectly support activities that threaten national integrity.
