Immunologist returns to China after US prison release

Song Guo Zheng, a top immunologist, was released from a US prison in 2023 after serving time for not disclosing his ties to China. He was imprisoned from 2020 to 2023 but was not convicted of theft or unauthorized transfers. Following his release, Zheng returned to China and joined Shanghai Jiao Tong University as a chair professor. He now leads a team focused on autoimmune diseases and cancer research. Zheng also heads a new institute supported by the university and the local government in Shanghai. His return marks a continuation of his work in the field after the end of the controversial China Initiative.
