Illegal constructions cause power line safety concerns in Punjab

timesofindia.indiatimes.com

In Punjab, the government is addressing issues related to high voltage power lines in residential areas. Power Minister Harbhajan Singh ETO spoke about this during a recent budget session of the Punjab assembly. MLA Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh raised concerns about residents living near 132 kV power lines. Areas like Musafabad, Tungbala, and Indra Colony face risks from these wires. Another MLA, Labh Singh Ugoke, also pointed out dangers to life and property in villages where these lines run over homes. ETO responded by stating that these power lines exist mainly where illegal constructions have taken place. He explained that the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited and the Punjab State Transmission Corporation Limited do not place power lines in residential areas. Any construction under these lines is not allowed unless it meets strict safety rules. Despite these regulations, some residents ignore safety guidelines and build illegally. When risks are identified, authorities take action by implementing safety measures and notifying residents about violations. ETO also mentioned that public notices have been issued to educate residents on the dangers of illegal structures near high voltage lines.
