Iceland's Blue Lagoon closes as volcanic eruption cuts off access roads
A volcanic eruption on Iceland's Reykjanes Peninsula has forced the temporary closure of the Blue Lagoon, a popular tourist site. Lava from the fissure has cut off roads and encircled the attraction, leading to its closure until at least December 4. The eruption began over a week ago after a period of quiet. It is the seventh eruption this year and follows an earthquake swarm that indicated volcanic activity. About 50 houses near the town of Grindaví́k were evacuated as a precaution. The lava field has expanded to 9.1 square kilometers, with an estimated volume of 47 million cubic meters. This eruption is now the second largest in the area since December 2023, highlighting the increased volcanic activity in Iceland.
