Hundreds mourn student Aalia Mahomed in London vigil
Hundreds gathered for a vigil honoring Aalia Mahomed, a 20-year-old student killed in a van crash near King’s College London. The accident occurred on March 18. Mourners gathered at St Mary le Strand Church to remember Aalia a week later. Those at the vigil laid flowers and shared memories. Aalia's family described her as a bright and happy person. Her nieces spoke fondly of her, saying she "lit up any room" and had a joyful spirit. They reminisced about their time spent together, showing the deep bond they shared. Aalia's aunt expressed her grief in a poem, calling her "an angel amongst us." Family and friends were moved as they remembered her laughter and kindness. The vigil also included a moment of silence at the exact time of her passing. Speakers at the event also wished for quick recoveries for two other students injured in the accident. Condolence books were set up on campus for those who wanted to share their thoughts. In her memory, a cherry tree was planted outside the church. Aalia was pronounced dead at the scene after emergency services arrived. The vice-chancellor of King’s College described the situation as a “senseless tragedy.” Police arrested the van driver on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and drug offenses. He has been released on bail as investigations continue. Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact the police.
