HRW calls Philippines to rejoin International Criminal Court
Human Rights Watch (HRW) urged the Philippine government on March 12, 2025, to rejoin the International Criminal Court (ICC) to tackle ongoing human rights violations. This call follows the arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte under an ICC warrant for crimes against humanity. HRW noted that support for rejoining the ICC is growing among Filipinos. The Philippine government has softened its stance on ICC cooperation, indicating a willingness to engage if an arrest warrant is issued against Duterte. Despite these developments, the Philippine Palace stated there have been no discussions about rejoining the ICC. Duterte was transferred to The Hague on a chartered flight after his arrest.
