Hougang family throws daughter from burning flat
A family in Singapore faced a terrifying situation last year when a fire broke out in their flat due to a malfunctioning personal mobility device (PMD). The incident took place on August 16, 2024, at Block 313 Hougang Avenue 5, just after midnight. The family's escape was dramatic and dangerous. As smoke filled their home, Mr. Muhammad Asif made a quick decision to jump from the second floor. His wife, Ms. Norhayani Jasman, was instructed to throw their five-year-old daughter, Nor Assyifa Alya, out the window. Ms. Norhayani comforted her daughter, saying, "I’m going to throw you to Papa, I love you," before tossing her down to Mr. Asif. After catching their daughter, Mr. Asif injured himself severely, breaking both heels from the fall. Firefighters arrived shortly after, rescuing Ms. Norhayani, who suffered burns, and her daughter, who had a hairline skull fracture. The family spent time in the hospital for their injuries, with Mr. Asif needing extensive medical treatment. Authorities have noted an increase in incidents involving PMDs, with 67 fires recorded in 2024, up from 55 the previous year. Although investigations into this particular fire did not identify a clear cause, officials urged the public to buy devices from certified retailers and avoid unsafe charging practices. Following the fire, the family moved to a new nearby flat and is waiting for a new apartment. They have decided to stop using PMDs altogether, citing safety concerns. The traumatic experience has left lasting effects on the family. Ms. Norhayani mentioned that they still get startled by loud noises, while their daughter has trouble understanding the event. As the family tries to recover, they reported that Mr. Asif now uses a bicycle for school runs, and they have been supported by fundraising efforts to cover medical costs. The incident has opened discussions about fire safety and the risks associated with PMDs.
