Hospital staff shared inappropriate surgery photos of patient

A woman named Gemma Sabatino has raised serious concerns after claiming that staff members at Addenbrooke's Hospital accessed her medical records and shared explicit photos of her surgery without permission. Gemma, who is suffering from terminal breast cancer, expressed feelings of violation and humiliation regarding the alleged breaches. Gemma underwent surgery after a fall from a bridge in late 2023 and spent two months in the hospital. It was through a friend overhearing a conversation in a hair salon that Gemma learned about the sharing of her medical information. She filed a complaint with Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Trust, suspecting that five specific staff members had inappropriately accessed her records. The Trust confirmed that three of the five staff members had accessed her files without proper justification, while two had done so for legitimate reasons. In a public statement, a Trust spokesperson assured that allegations of privacy breaches are taken seriously and are under investigation. Gemma shared her distress, stating that discovering the unauthorized access made her feel unsafe in a place where she thought she would be cared for. She expressed her sorrow over the invasion of her personal medical information, including details of her cancer treatment and discussions with her healthcare providers. Feeling betrayed, Gemma has lodged a complaint with the Information Commissioner's Office. She reported experiencing significant mental distress due to the situation and has since switched to West Suffolk Hospital for her treatment. Gemma expressed trust issues, stating that she is now scared to discuss her feelings with the staff at Addenbrooke's due to the breach. Her sister, Angelina, voiced the family's outrage at the situation, calling for stricter measures against privacy violations in medical facilities. A representative from the police confirmed that they are aware of the allegations and are waiting for the outcome of the hospital's internal investigation before taking further action.
