Gurnee mayoral candidates commit to positive campaign approach
Gurnee Mayor Tom Hood is seeking a second term in the upcoming election on April 1. He faces Village Trustee Quin O’Brien, who is currently serving his second term on the Village Board. Both candidates have pledged to maintain a positive campaign and avoid any negative attacks against one another. O’Brien, who began discussing a potential run for mayor two years ago, believes he can bring a fresh approach to the role. He has been active in Gurnee politics since being elected to the Village Board in 2019 and founded a real estate company in 2000. He is now semi-retired and says that community feedback encouraged him to run for mayor. O’Brien wants to focus on transforming areas of Gurnee east of U.S. Route 41 into a revenue-producing destination. He also emphasizes the need to replace old underground water pipes. Mayor Hood has built a working relationship with O’Brien over the past four years. He appreciates O’Brien’s contributions and agrees that both candidates have good qualities. However, Hood insists that his experience as mayor has equipped him for leadership. He highlighted his achievements during his term, especially the village's recovery from the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Hood is proud of how local businesses and residents have bounced back, citing successful community events and grant programs that promote neighborhood gatherings. If reelected, he plans to continue focusing on public safety and environmental concerns, specifically addressing emissions from a local chemical company. Both candidates are committed to running a campaign based on respect and positive dialogue as they approach the election date.
