Gujarat activists protest BJP MLA's alleged proselytisation efforts
Tribal activists in south Gujarat are worried about growing proselytisation in the area, particularly in Vyara. They have accused local BJP MLA Mohan Konkani of promoting this evangelism. Activists like Arvind Vasava from Dev Birsa Sena claim that around 1,500 illegal churches have been built in the district, impacting tribal identity and access to sacred sites. Vasava highlights concerns over Gid Madi Dungar, a hillock that has been an important spiritual site for local tribes. He states that the area, now restricted, has been affected by the construction of a new church dedicated to Mother Mary. There's also a new concrete road leading to it, making it harder for tribal people to visit their traditional shrine. Despite protests and petitions to the state government, activists say they have seen no action taken to address their concerns. Vasava is advocating for the protection of tribal identity against what he sees as invasive religious practices. When reached for a comment, MLA Konkani declined to speak and previously denied the allegations made against him. BJP media coordinator Yagnesh Dave also refused to provide a statement. In addition, VHP joint secretary Dharmendra Bhavani suggested that the BJP should be more cautious with candidates like Konkani in future elections.
