Gregor Robertson enters federal politics in Vancouver
Former Vancouver mayor Gregor Robertson is stepping back into politics, this time as a candidate for the Liberal party in the new riding of Vancouver Fraserview-South Burnaby. He aims to replace outgoing Liberal MP Harjit Sajjan. Robertson, who served as mayor from 2008 to 2018, expressed concerns about the current political climate. He described the times as "unprecedented" and stated that Canada faces serious challenges, particularly from the U.S. “Our sovereignty is on the table,” he said. He emphasized the need for leaders to stand up during this critical period. As a former mayor and provincial MLA, Robertson believes his experience positions him well for the role of MP. He also brings entrepreneurial skills from co-founding a juice company. "This is the time when we need expertise," he noted, aiming to use his background to help Canada. However, not everyone supports his candidacy. The Conservative Party criticized Robertson for his record in Vancouver, claiming he is linked to rising home prices and drug deaths. They labeled him a "green extremist," questioning if he is a suitable candidate. Robertson had previously promised to "end homelessness" in Vancouver by 2015. A decade later, the issue persists. When asked about his pledge, he defended it, stating the importance of setting ambitious goals and acknowledged the global housing crisis. Political analysts suggest that Liberal Leader Mark Carney's decision to nominate Robertson reflects a desire to introduce new talent to the party while signaling a shift towards broader appeal. Canadians will vote in the upcoming election on April 28.
