Grand Rapids educators protest against federal education cuts
Several educators and community members protested outside Union High School in Grand Rapids on March 19. They were opposing recent cuts to the federal education budget. The protest was organized by the Grand Rapids Education Association, the teachers' union. The demonstration was part of a larger national movement led by the National Education Association. Last week, the federal Department of Education announced plans to lay off over 1,300 employees. Education Secretary Linda McMahon stated that only Congress can eliminate the Department but hinted at potential cuts and reorganization. Blake Mazurek, a leader from the Michigan Education Association, expressed concern about the impact of these cuts. He emphasized that students and families rely on the funding and services provided by the Department. He warned that reducing federal support could make it more difficult for families to access needed resources. On the same day, over 170 protests were scheduled across the United States, including in several Michigan cities. Protests were organized in places like Dewitt, Port Huron, and South Lyon. Mazurek reported that more than 20 protests were confirmed throughout Michigan.
