Google demonstrates quantum error reduction by 40x with new technique
Google's quantum AI team demonstrated a technique that reduces errors by roughly 40 times on its Willow processor, publishing the research in the journal Science on Thursday. The breakthrough addresses a major bottleneck in quantum computing. Known as "magic state cultivation," the method generates reliable quantum states more efficiently, potentially cutting the cost of producing magic states, which can consume up to 95% of a quantum computer's processing power. The team achieved 99.99% logical fidelity for T-states and demonstrated transfer between error correction methods. The results provide experimental proof of a theoretical approach from 2024. Google says further research is needed to scale the technology, but the advance offers a path toward reducing hardware resources required for fault-tolerant quantum systems.
