Google and Meta support tripling nuclear capacity by 2050
Google, Meta, and other major companies have pledged to triple global nuclear power capacity by 2050. This commitment reflects a growing interest in nuclear energy as demand for electricity rises, particularly due to AI technologies. Nuclear power's share of the global energy mix has declined from 24% in 2001 to about 17% in 2023. However, over 70 gigawatts of new nuclear capacity is currently under construction, marking one of the highest levels in 30 years. Public perception of nuclear energy remains mixed, influenced by past accidents. Despite this, industry leaders believe that increasing energy security needs may shift opinions in favor of nuclear power as a stable, low-emission energy source.
