Global restoration hits only 25% of 2030 target, UN report finds

deccanherald.com —

A new UN report reveals only 252 million hectares of the 1 billion hectare restoration target has been met globally, with the 2030 deadline approaching and finance falling short of needs. Asia accounts for 76 percent of restored land, led by China, while Europe and North America lag far behind. Restoration finance reached $64 billion in 2022, but annual investment must rise to $296 billion by 2030. The report, released at the CBD conference in Yerevan, notes 46 countries failed to provide quantitative data. Land ecosystems comprise 92 percent of restored areas, with freshwater and marine ecosystems trailing significantly.
