A new study reveals only 6.9% of materials used globally are recycled, a decline contributing to environmental strain and increased greenhouse gas emissions. This figure represents a 2.2% decrease over the past decade, with nearly 90% of materials becoming waste. The Circularity Gap Report 2025 highlights that material consumption is outpacing recycling capacity, exacerbating the climate crisis. The report, released at the World Circular Economy Forum, emphasizes the need for systemic change beyond recycling, despite its importance. Brazil, for example, recycles only 8% of its recyclable urban solid waste.
