Global obesity rates have risen significantly since 1990
A new study shows that obesity rates increased around the world from 1990 to 2021. This rise in overweight and obesity has doctors warning about a serious health crisis. Dr. Reimarie Pineda, an Internal Medicine Doctor in California, says obesity might become the next pandemic if not addressed. The study highlights that countries like China, India, and the U.S. have the highest number of overweight or obese adults. Obesity rates began to climb after World War II. Dr. Pineda explains that food production changed during this time. Chemical additives were used to make food last longer, leading to more processed foods that contribute to unhealthy weight gain. To combat obesity, experts suggest making better food choices, managing stress, and increasing physical activity. Personal trainer Rhonda Murphy emphasizes that staying active is crucial. She recommends aiming for a daily caloric intake of 1500-2000 calories and exercising regularly to help reduce those calories. The World Health Organization notes that adult obesity has doubled and teenage obesity has quadrupled since 1990. Dr. Pineda states that obesity is now recognized as a chronic medical condition, unlike in the past. Experts encourage everyone to keep moving. Even small changes can create a healthier routine. Murphy suggests that it doesn't require intense workouts; just getting up and being active every day matters. When it comes to weight loss medications, health experts caution that they are not a universal solution. Dr. Pineda believes that these drugs should not be seen as the primary way to tackle obesity.
