Germany may decriminalize early abortions

Germany's Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig is open to decriminalizing abortions in the first three months of pregnancy. Hubig stated that while abortions are currently illegal but not punishable in the first trimester, a broad majority opposes this legal status. She personally supports this change but insists mandatory counseling should remain. This proposal aligns with the coalition agreement to expand cost coverage for abortions by statutory health insurance, a move Hubig believes may not require changes to the current criminal code.
