German voters divided over JD Vance's free speech comments ahead of election
New polling shows German voters are divided over U.S. Vice President JD Vance's recent comments on free speech. A survey indicates 55% disapprove of his critique of European governments, while 43% approve. Vance's remarks, made at the Munich Security Conference, suggested European nations censor free speech and interfere in elections. Despite the controversy, 68% of respondents reported no change in their likelihood to vote for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD). As the election approaches, the center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) leads with 28% support, followed by the AfD at 24% and the Social Democratic Party at 15%. Alice Weidel of the AfD is the preferred choice for Chancellor among voters.
