Genomic test tailors prostate cancer treatment, cutting death risk in half
A new study suggests a genomic test could personalize treatment for high-risk prostate cancer by identifying which men benefit most from adding hormone therapy abiraterone to standard care, potentially halving death risk. Researchers analyzed Decipher scores from a real-world dataset of nearly 28,000 men and 401 patients in the STAMPEDE trial. Higher scores consistently predicted worse outcomes, with each 0.1 increase raising metastasis risk by 49% and prostate cancer death risk by 38%. The findings, presented at a Madrid conference on Saturday, indicate men with low scores could avoid intensive treatment, while high scorers should be prioritized for it. NHS England began rolling out abiraterone for this patient group in January.
