Gardening expert shares April tasks for bee benefits
As spring arrives, gardening experts suggest several tasks to tackle in April. These tips include planting vegetables and caring for existing plants, with a focus on helping bees and butterflies. One recommendation is to sow fast-growing vegetables like radishes and salad leaves every few weeks. Gardeners can easily do this by making a small ditch in the soil and placing seeds about one centimeter apart. If gardeners have peas that are growing too big for their pots, they should replant them now, ensuring they have something to climb. It's also not too late to start growing peas if you haven't done so yet. For those growing chives, the expert advises splitting them into smaller groups for replanting. This method helps increase the number of chives you can harvest. In addition, April is an ideal time to plant courgettes, cucumbers, and tomatoes but it’s best to keep them indoors until the risk of frost has passed. If a lawn is looking thin, April is also a good time to overseed and fill in any bare spots. The expert mentions trying crimson clover instead of traditional grass, highlighting its benefits for pollinators and soil health. Lastly, gardeners should check under their pots for seedlings that may need to be moved to larger pots. This helps ensure they have enough space to grow. Indoor plants may also require more frequent watering as the weather warms up.
