Fraudsters target UPI users in Tamil Nadu with malicious app to steal money

economictimes.indiatimes.com

Fraudsters have targeted UPI users in Tamil Nadu using a malicious app called 'PM Kisan Yojna.' This app, distributed via WhatsApp, gains control of users' SMS and device permissions to facilitate unauthorized transactions. Investigations revealed that the app intercepts SMS messages to manipulate UPI applications, allowing scammers to register devices and steal sensitive personal information. Victims have reported unexpected deductions from their bank accounts, primarily through PhonePe. In November 2024, seven complaints were filed in Tamil Nadu regarding these unauthorized transactions. All reported deductions were traced to transfers made to Amazon Pay. Authorities advise users to only use official apps for financial transactions.
