France wastes UK funds on ineffective Calais barriers
France has installed road barriers near Calais to deter people smugglers, using funds provided by the United Kingdom. These barriers, costing UK taxpayers money, are only closed at night, which has drawn criticism. The barriers are intended to prevent smugglers from accessing beaches during nighttime hours. The recent installation aims to address increasing migrant arrivals. Despite the presence of the barriers, migrants continue to cross the English Channel, and the current year has already seen a record number of arrivals. Eritrean migrants now represent the largest group crossing the channel in small boats. Over 1,200 Eritreans have crossed in the first three months of the year.
