Former Sydney band member accuses colleague of sexual abuse and grooming

Melanie James, a former member of the City of Sydney concert band, has accused a bandmate, John Harley, of grooming and sexually abusing her when she was a teenager in the 1990s. Harley is 32 years older than James. James claims that other band members were aware of the alleged abuse but did not take action. She is now advocating for all members of the NSW Band Association to undergo Working with Children Checks. At 15, James was reportedly in a sexual relationship with Harley, which she says has left her unable to play music without distress. Harley has not commented on the allegations.
