Flu cases surge in Kane County emergency rooms as respiratory illnesses rise nationwide
Kane County hospitals report a significant rise in emergency room visits for flu and respiratory illnesses, with flu cases jumping from under 2% to over 10% of visits in early January. This trend aligns with a nationwide increase in flu cases. As of January 4, nearly 15% of emergency room visits in Kane County were for respiratory illnesses, including flu, COVID-19, and RSV. In Illinois, flu visits accounted for 5.8% of emergency room cases, compared to a peak of 5% last year. Flu vaccination rates in Kane County are slightly above 25%. Experts note that this year's vaccine may be less effective, and the area is experiencing higher flu rates than last winter. Hospitals have not changed masking policies but continue to require masks in certain areas.
