Five Villupuram policemen retired for hooch tragedy involvement

Five policemen in Villupuram district have been forced into retirement over their involvement in a tragic hooch incident. The tragedy occurred in Marakkanam and resulted in the deaths of 14 people in May 2023. The officers include two head constables and three constables. Head constables Senthil Kumar and Velu, along with constables Prabhu, Muthukumar, and Gunasekaran, were implicated in the case. The Deputy Inspector General of Police for the Villupuram Range, Disha Mittal, issued the retirement orders after a departmental inquiry. The inquiry confirmed allegations that the officers were working with illegal alcohol traders. The hooch tragedy, which shocked the region, mostly affected residents from Ekkiyarkuppam, a coastal village near Marakkanam.
