First robotic kidney transplant performed in Hyderabad

Urologists at Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad have successfully performed the first robotic kidney transplant at their facility. The surgery was conducted on a 33-year-old man from Nalgonda, Telangana, who had been suffering from end-stage renal disease for almost ten years. The patient had a previous kidney transplant in 2017, which failed due to chronic rejection. For his second transplant, he received a kidney from a deceased donor. The operation was complex because of his medical history, but it went smoothly without any complications. Dr. Rahul Devraj, head of the urology department, reported that the new kidney started functioning immediately. It produced a good amount of urine right after surgery, indicating the transplant was successful. Dr. Devraj called this achievement a milestone for government hospitals in South India. He explained that robotic-assisted kidney transplantation enhances surgical precision, reduces the size of incisions, lowers postoperative pain, and speeds up recovery for patients.
