Firefly's lunar lander plans Sunday moon landing attempt
Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost lunar lander is set to attempt a soft landing on the moon early Sunday morning. This mission aims to land near Mons Latreille, an ancient volcanic feature, marking a significant step in private lunar exploration. The Blue Ghost lander is equipped with advanced sensors and ten scientific instruments, including a device testing GPS capabilities on the moon. It will also capture high-definition video of unique lunar phenomena, such as the lunar horizon glow. This mission is part of NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services initiative, which encourages private companies to develop lunar landers. Firefly's contract with NASA has increased from $93 million to $101 million to enhance the lander's ability to survive extreme lunar night temperatures.
