Fighting in eastern Congo kills 13 U.N. peacekeepers and foreign soldiers
Fighting in eastern Congo has intensified, resulting in the deaths of at least 13 peacekeepers and foreign soldiers. The M23 rebel group has gained ground, surrounding the city of Goma, which is home to about 2 million people. The U.N. Security Council has scheduled an emergency meeting to address the escalating violence. Congo's army, supported by U.N. troops and allied forces, has repelled M23's advances toward Goma. The conflict has seen significant casualties among peacekeepers, including South African and Uruguayan soldiers. The U.N. peacekeeping force in Congo, known as MONUSCO, has been active for over two decades, with around 14,000 personnel deployed.
