Fighting escalates in eastern DR Congo as rebels advance towards Bukavu

Fighting has intensified in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo as M23 rebels, backed by Rwanda, advance towards Bukavu after capturing Goma. The Congolese army has established a defensive line, while civilian volunteers are mobilizing to protect the city. The conflict has resulted in at least 700 deaths and over 2,800 injuries since Sunday. The humanitarian situation is worsening, with residents facing shortages of food, water, and medical supplies. More than 400,000 people have been displaced since the start of 2025. Rwanda denies accusations of illegal occupation and claims its troops are securing borders.
