CDC recommends new pentavalent meningococcal vaccine, Penbraya, developed by Pfizer.
The CDC's independent vaccine advisors have recommended a new pentavalent meningococcal vaccine, Penbraya, developed by Pfizer, which protects against five kinds of bacteria and could potentially prevent meningococcal disease. Currently, there are two types of meningococcal vaccines in the US: the MenACWY vaccine, which protects against four groups of meningococcal bacteria, and the MenB vaccine, which protects against meningitis B. The new vaccine would offer broad protection with fewer shots and could help improve vaccination rates, as currently only 30% of 17-year-olds are getting even one dose.
