Europe enforces USB-C charging standard for electronic devices
The European Union's Common Charger Directive is now in effect, requiring most electronic devices with rechargeable batteries to use USB-C ports. This change aims to reduce the variety of charging cables and plugs in the market. Apple has already adapted its products, discontinuing the Lightning-charging iPhone 14 and iPhone SE in the EU. Other devices, like phones and tablets, must comply immediately, while laptops have until April 2026. The directive also mandates that devices with fast charging support the USB Power Delivery standard. Companies must label products to indicate charging requirements and whether they include a charging plug. Enforcement will be managed by individual EU member states.
