EU strengthens trade strategy to address US tariffs under Trump
The European Union has enhanced its trade strategy in response to U.S. tariffs under Donald Trump. The EU aims for dialogue but is prepared to respond firmly if negotiations fail, claiming to be better equipped than before. Commission President Ursula von der Leyen criticized the U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminum as unlawful and promised a "firm and proportionate" response. She also emphasized the need for cooperation on issues like the Chinese steel surplus during a meeting with U.S. officials. EU trade chief Maroš Šefčovič called for constructive dialogue with U.S. trade representatives. He received strong backing from EU trade ministers for the Commission's approach during an emergency video call.
