Eritrea receives £15 million for energy access project
Eritrea, one of the poorest countries in the world, has received a £15 million grant for a major power project. This project aims to improve energy access for over 235,000 people, with a focus on women and youth. The funding comes from the African Development Bank Group as part of the Desert to Power initiative. The project will build mini-grids that generate a total of 12 megawatts of electricity in different areas, including Teseney, Kerekebet, and Barentu. During the signing ceremony, Eritrean Minister Teklemichae emphasized the importance of African nations working together to bring about positive change. He expressed confidence that the project would benefit many people, including households, small farms, schools, and health centers. In addition to the power project, Eritrea hopes to develop its tourism sector in the future. The country features unique attractions such as archaeological sites, stunning beaches along the Red Sea, and remarkable Modernist architecture from the Italian occupation. The capital city, Asmara, showcases elegant Art Deco buildings, stylish cinemas, and cafes that reflect its vibrant culture.
