Eight Hong Kong students infected with norovirus in China
At least eight members of a Hong Kong school group have tested positive for norovirus after a trip to mainland China. Another 13 people from the same group are showing symptoms consistent with the virus. Health authorities said the group included 135 teachers and students from Po Leung Kuk Lo Kit Sing (1983) College. They went on a three-day exchange tour to Zhaoqing, Guangdong province, starting on Thursday. Symptoms of norovirus infection, such as vomiting and diarrhea, appeared in 20 students and one teacher between Friday morning and Saturday morning. Eighteen of them sought medical help while in Zhaoqing. All have since been discharged and are in stable condition. The Centre for Health Protection noted that the group had shared meals during the trip but did not eat the same food otherwise. There have been no recent outbreaks of gastroenteritis at the school. Authorities are investigating but cannot rule out the possibility of contaminated food being the cause.
