Edmonton company fined over $300,000 for environmental violations

cbc.ca

An Edmonton company, Cancen Oil Processors Inc., has been fined $303,769 by the Alberta Energy Regulator for violating an environmental protection order. This order was issued after a harmful release from an oilfield disposal well in February 2023. Cancen was previously warned in April 2022 about the risks of leaving fluids in inactive tanks. The company received a notice of non-compliance in August 2022 for failing to contain a spill and did not follow the subsequent order to address the issue. The release included harmful materials that flowed into a water runoff pond. Cancen plans to begin remediation efforts in May by removing contaminated soil. The company had faced a similar penalty in 2021 for other waste management issues.
