Duterte's arrest marks progress for accountability in Philippines
Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has been arrested for crimes against humanity related to his administration's war on drugs. Human Rights Watch stated this arrest is a significant move towards accountability for victims and their families. Duterte faces charges linked to thousands of extrajudicial killings, with estimates of the death toll ranging from 6,000 to 20,000. The arrest warrant was issued by the International Criminal Court and received by Interpol in Manila. Duterte returned to Manila from Hong Kong shortly before his arrest.
