Duterte becomes first Asian leader arrested by ICC

The International Criminal Court (ICC) is a global court that prosecutes serious international crimes like genocide and crimes against humanity. Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte was arrested under an ICC warrant for his role in deadly anti-drug operations during his presidency. Duterte is the first former Asian leader to be arrested by the ICC. He arrived in the Netherlands after his arrest in the Philippines, despite claims from his supporters that the court lacks jurisdiction due to his country's withdrawal in 2019. The ICC relies on state cooperation for arrests and has issued 60 warrants since its establishment in 2002. It currently houses five other suspects and has convicted 11 individuals, including war criminals from various countries.
