Duterte attends ICC hearing remotely from the Philippines
Former President Rodrigo Duterte attended a pre-trial hearing at the International Criminal Court (ICC) via video link. This marked his first appearance before the court, as he was authorized to follow the proceedings remotely. Duterte arrived in the Netherlands and was taken to the ICC Detention Center. He faces an arrest warrant for alleged crimes against humanity related to his anti-drug campaign in the Philippines from 2011 to 2019. The ICC retains jurisdiction over these allegations despite Duterte's withdrawal from the Rome Statute in 2018, as the withdrawal took effect a year later. Human rights groups estimate the death toll from his drug war to be significantly higher than official figures.
