Duterte arrested to face ICC charges in The Hague

Former Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte has been arrested and is being flown to The Hague to face charges of crimes against humanity. This marks the first time a former leader from the region has been arrested by the International Criminal Court (ICC). Duterte was taken into custody upon arrival in Manila from Hong Kong, following an ICC warrant related to his anti-drug crackdown that allegedly resulted in thousands of deaths. His daughter criticized the government for surrendering him to a foreign court. The ICC has been investigating Duterte's actions from 2011 to 2019, and a recent ruling allowed the investigation to continue despite the Philippines' withdrawal from the court. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. stated that Duterte's arrest was proper and in line with international obligations.
