Duterte arrested to face crimes against humanity charges
Former Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte has been arrested and is being flown to The Hague to face charges of crimes against humanity. This marks the first time a former leader from the region has been arrested by the International Criminal Court (ICC). Duterte was detained upon returning to Manila from Hong Kong, following an ICC warrant related to deadly anti-drug operations during his presidency. His daughter criticized the Marcos administration for cooperating with the ICC, while Duterte questioned the legality of his arrest. The ICC has been investigating mass killings linked to Duterte's anti-drug campaign from 2011 to 2019. The court's warrant states there are reasonable grounds to believe the killings were widespread and systematic, necessitating his arrest to ensure he appears before the court.
