Duterte arrested in Manila on ICC warrant

Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte was arrested at Manila's international airport on Tuesday. This follows a warrant from the International Criminal Court related to alleged crimes against humanity during his anti-drug campaign. The ICC has been investigating Duterte's actions from 2011 to 2019, despite his withdrawal from the Rome Statute in 2019. The court resumed its investigation in July 2023 after rejecting objections from Duterte's administration. Current President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has chosen not to rejoin the ICC but stated that his government would cooperate with any requests for Duterte's custody.
