Duterte arrested in Manila on ICC warrant

Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte was arrested at Manila's airport on an International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant. This follows an investigation into alleged crimes against humanity linked to his anti-drug campaign from 2011 to 2019. Duterte had previously withdrawn the Philippines from the ICC in 2019, claiming the court lacked jurisdiction. However, the ICC resumed its investigation in July 2023, rejecting objections from Duterte's administration. Current President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has chosen not to rejoin the ICC but stated his government would cooperate with the court if requested to assist in Duterte's arrest.
