Duterte arrested in Manila for drug war-related crimes
Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte was arrested in Manila on Tuesday under an International Criminal Court warrant related to his controversial "war on drugs." This campaign, which lasted from 2016 to 2022, resulted in thousands of deaths. Duterte's drug war began shortly after he took office, with police reporting over 6,200 deaths during anti-drug operations. Human rights groups claim the actual number is much higher, citing extrajudicial killings and vigilante violence. The ICC reopened its investigation into the drug war in 2023 after expressing dissatisfaction with the Philippines' judicial response. The current government has indicated a willingness to cooperate with the ICC.
