Duterte arrested, heading to The Hague for charges
Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has been arrested and is being flown to The Hague to face charges of crimes against humanity. This follows an International Criminal Court warrant related to his controversial anti-drug campaign. Duterte was detained at Manila airport upon returning from Hong Kong. His arrest marks the first time a former Asian leader has been taken into custody by the ICC, which has been investigating mass killings during his presidency. Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. stated that the arrest was proper, despite Duterte's claims of legal violations. The ICC's investigation into Duterte's actions began in 2011 and resumed after a ruling in 2023.
