Duterte arrested for ICC drug war charges in Hague

Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has been arrested and is on his way to The Hague to face charges from the International Criminal Court related to his drug war, which allegedly resulted in thousands of deaths. His lawyers have filed a petition to return him to Manila, claiming "kidnapping." Duterte's daughter, Vice President Sara Duterte, criticized the transfer, calling it oppression. Despite his belief that the Philippine Supreme Court would intervene, no legal reprieve was granted. The ICC confirmed the arrest warrant and will schedule a hearing for Duterte. The Philippines withdrew from the ICC in 2019, but the court maintains jurisdiction over events prior to that. The Marcos administration has shifted from non-cooperation to stating it will comply with Interpol requests regarding the case.
