Duterte arrested for drug war killings charges
Former Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte was arrested in Manila and taken into custody by the International Criminal Court (ICC) on Wednesday. He faces murder charges related to his controversial "war on drugs," which resulted in thousands of deaths. Duterte, 79, arrived at Rotterdam airport in the Netherlands and was moved to a detention unit on the Dutch coast. He will appear before an ICC judge in The Hague in the coming days. The ICC alleges that Duterte oversaw death squads that targeted drug users and dealers during his presidency from 2016 to 2022. He could be the first Asian former head of state to stand trial at the ICC.
